Best Film Fest shows highlights of 2017

Films from the second half of the year will be at four cinemas for a discount

As the year comes to a close, everybody is coming up with lists of the best films of the year. There might be a few you missed. Four Prague cinemas are joining together to show many of the 2017’s top releases for just Kč 69 per ticket in a program called Best Film Fest. The films will be at Atlas, Evald, Lucerna, and MAT from Dec. 14 to 20.

Films from the second half of 2017 will be included in the 13th edition of the semi-annual festival. The films are in their original versions with Czech subtitles, but many of the most significant entries are in English.

A film sure to be remembered when awards are given out is Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, a tense drama about the evacuation of the British Army from the French coast during the beginning of World War II. The visually impressive film should be seen on a cinema screen for its full impact.

Another potential award winner is Wind River, a modern-day western with Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen investigating the murder of a Native American woman in an isolated area. The film points out that due to technicalities, such crimes often go overlooked and unsolved.

An art film with a very good cast, The Killing of a Sacred Deer features Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman in a dark psychological thriller by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos. The film won Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes International Film Festival.

Director Darren Aronofsky’s new film Mother! also blends psychological tones with horror to create one of the most unsettling films in a long time. It stars Jennifer Lawrence a Javier Bardem.

The horror film IT, based on a Stephen King novel, is also among the offerings. The film was regarded by critics as one of the best of the summer, and best adaptations of Stephen King in a long time.

A little less popular was A Mountain Between Us, the tale of a plane wreck with two survivors played by Idris Elba and Kate Winslet. The romantic survival tale was praised for its acting but lost points for being too contrived.

Sci-fi fans have another chance to catch Blade Runner 2049, the stunning sequel to the 1982 cult film Blade Runner.

Other English-language films include the crime drama The Snowman, the whodunit mystery Murder on the Orient Express and the costume drama Tulip Fever.

Lucerna will be playing some screenings of the original English-language version of the biopic Milada, about Czech patriot Milada Horáková and her efforts to oppose communism in Czechoslovakia. Other screenings will be of the Czech-dubbed version, so be sure to check before buying tickets.
