Nordic Film Winter presenting 28 films

The eighth year again offers a wide array from war movies to time travel

Nordic Film Winter film festival runs Feb. 8 to 14 at Prague’s kino Lucerna and has editions in 13 other cities including Brno.

The festival of Nordic and Baltic cinema is in its eighth year. The 2018 festival has 28 movies, eight new films, eight films from Sweden, eight from Norway and eight comedies. The opening ceremony will take place at Lucerna cinema on Feb. 8, where eight winning spectators will win rewards.

The festival will be launched by Finnish Ambassador Helena Tuuri, who will introduce drama The Eternal Road (Nekonečná cesta /Ikitie). In 1930 a man is forced by Finnish anti-Communists to make the long journey from Finland to Soviet Russia. His dream is to return to his family at any cost. Another Finnish film in the festival is Star Boys (Na věčné časy / Kaiken se kestää), set in the 1970s when the sexual revolution comes to a conservative Finnish town.

The movie April 9th (9. duben / 9. april) covers events in Denmark at the start of World War II. Information about Denmark’s surrender did not reach all the units, and some border guards fought on.

The Danish drama Darling (Darling) shows a ballet dancer diagnosed with permanent hip damage while training for an important performance. She does not want to leave the ballet because her husband works as a choreographer. But switching from a dancer to a teacher is not so easy when younger dancers get all the attention. The young dancer in that film, Astrid Grarup Elbo, was an adviser for the film Walk with Me (Kráčej se mnou / De Standhaftige). The film is about a wounded soldier meeting a dancer is also at the festival.

The Norwegian film Handle with Care (Restart / Hjertestart) has an oil worker going to Colombia to find the biological mother of his adopted son. Also from Norway is Drib (Drib), about marketing an energy drink. A comedy called The Balcony (Z balkónu / Fra balkongen) asks if you can enjoy life despite having a cheating husband.

The films Staying Alive (Staying Alive) and Women in Oversized Men's Shirts (Ženy v příliš velkých pánských košilích / Kvinner i for store herreskjorter) also look at women seeking identity and happiness.

The Swedish-Danish film My Future Love (Útěk do budoucnosti / Flykten till framtiden) has a young man with a heart ailment travel in time from the year 1973 to 2016 to find a cure for his disease. During his adventure, he finds new love at the wrong time.

Sweden’s Beyond Dreams (Nepřestávej snít / Dröm vidare) shows a woman leading a double life after serving jail time. The comedy Holy Mess (Kyselé Vánoce / En underbar jävla jul) focuses on topical issues with great exaggeration during the holidays.

The Swedish classic Stockholm Stories (Povídky ze Stockholmu / Stockholm Stories) is a humorous drama about five people whose paths cross after a sudden power failure.

From the Baltic cinema, there is the retro-comedy series The Dissidents (Hrdinové / Sangarid) about three young men escaping from the Soviet era Estonia for a better life in Sweden. and the Estonian remake of a Danish hit The Class Reunion (Třídní sraz po estonsku / Klassikokkutulek).

The Lithuanian film The Deprotee (Výletnice / Ekskursantė) is a story about a 10-year-old girl who escaped from a deportation train and goes on a 6,000-kilometer long journey from Siberia back home to her native Lithuania.

Films have subtitles in English and Czech, and Czech for the hearing impaired.

The festival is organized by the Nordic Film Club with the financial support of Volvo Car Czech Republic, the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, Prague City Hall, the City of Brno and the Embassies of the Nordic States.
