Forman’s Amadeus at the Municipal House

The director will be remembered at a special evening of film and music

Prague will remember the work of director Miloš Forman on Sunday, April 22, at the Municipal House (Obecní dům).

The Oscar-winning director died April 13 in Connecticut at the age of 86, and a private funeral was later held there for friends and family.

As part of the memorial event in Prague, the three-hour director's version of Amadeus will be shown and the Prague Symphony Orchestra (FOK) will perform, according to City Councilor Jan Wolf (KDU-ČSL), who is responsible for culture. today.

The orchestra, led by Tomáš Brauner, will play the prelude to Don Giovanni and Symphony No. 38 in D major, known as the Prague Symphony. A documentary about Forman made by young directors from the film school FAMU, will also be shown.

The National Film Archive is lending the print of the Amadeus. Admission to the concert and film screening will be Kč 100. The proceeds will be donated to the directing program at FAMU.

Forman was in Prague in 2002 for the premiere of the director’s cut of Amadeus. He said at the time that over 20 minutes of scenes were left out in the 1980s because the distributor was concerned that nobody would go to a three-hour costume drama during an era that was dominated by music videos.

But by the early 2000s, people were used to sitting home with videotapes and DVDs, and would sit through longer films. Also, the DVD technology could at that time finally handle high-quality sound. Forman won Oscars for Best Director for both Amadeus and his previous film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. He began his career as one of the prominent directors of the Czech New Wave but left the country after the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion that brought an end to the Prague Spring movement.

Forman will also be remembered Friday, April 19, in his native town of Čáslav, near in Kutná Hora. The local cinema will screen a documentary depicting the director's visit to the city 10 years ago.
