More guests announced for Karlovy Vary

Actor Robert Pattinson is among the newly announced stars

More guests including actor Robert Pattinson have been announced for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which runs from June 29 to July 7 at the spa town in Western Bohemia.

The festival's opening film will be the classic Loves of a Blonde, a 1965 film by Czech director Miloš Forman, who died earlier this year.

Stars will be seen on the red carpet of the Thermal Hotel before the black-tie opening ceremony.

Newly announced guests at the opening ceremony of this year’s festival will be director Taika Waititi and producer Carthew Neal, who are currently shooting their latest film, Jojo Rabbit, in the Czech Republic. The film deals with a family hiding a Jewish boy during World War II.

New Zealand director Waititi previously made What We Do in the Shadow and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, which both screened at earlier Karlovy Vary festivals. He is also the director of the blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok.

Carthew Neal is a New Zealand film and television producer who has long collaborated with Waititi on film and television projects. In 2016, he was named Independent Producer of the Year in his home country and was included in Variety’s 2016 Producers to Watch.

These guests are in addition to previously announced guests, such as Tim Robbins, who will receive a Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema at the opening ceremony.

Robbins will later appear on stage as a musician on July 4 at Karlovy Vary’s Municipal Theatre with his band, the Rogues Gallery Band. Tickets to the concert goon sale July 1.

He will also give a talk and present two films, including an outdoor screening of The Shawshank Redemption on June 30.

Director Richard Linklater and actress Trine Dyrholm will also attend the opening.

Dyrholm on June 30 will introduce the film Nico, 1988 and will give a talk July 1. Linklater will introduce Slacker on July 1 and give a talk July 2.

British actor Robert Pattinson, known for the Twilight films, will be a special guest at the closing ceremony on July 7. During the evening ceremony, Pattinson will receive the Festival President’s Award, which is presented to outstanding personalities of world cinema.

Also at the closing, Czech actor Jaromír Hanzlík will get the Festival President’s Award for Artistic Contribution to Czech Cinema.

The closing film is Sink or Swim, a comedy by French director Gilles Lellouche that was a hit at Cannes.

In between the opening and closing, there are several other guests who will present their films.

Portuguese actress Joana Ribeiro will join director Terry Gilliam to present Gilliam’s new film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. The screening will take place on July 4 at the Hotel Thermal.

Gilliam cast Ribeiro, previously known for her TV roles, as s Spanish girl who appeared in the main character’s student film and is now in a relationship with a rich man who abuses her.

“On my first meeting with Joana, I was convinced I had found our Angelica. She is very intelligent, Latin, beautiful and dangerous. She had the difficult task of playing Angelica as an innocent 15-year-old, and an older, life-hardened woman. I think Joana will go on to be a fantastic star,“ Gilliam said in a press release. The director was previously at the festival in 2006.

Other notable celebrities include Caleb Landry Jones, who will be present for the world premiere of the competition film To the Night. Jones was recently in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and the reboot of the TV series Twin Peaks.

Actress Anna Paquin, who won an Oscar for The Piano and played Rogue in the early X-Men films, will introduce the film The Parting Glass on July 1.
