English-friendly films for October

There are films at Dlabačov and Světozor, plus several festivals

Prague’s art theaters are continuing with special English-friendly programs. Kino Dlabačov in Prague 6 has double features on Mondays or Tuesdays, while Světozor is continuing with Catch Up Tuesdays

In addition during October, there are English friendly films in the Be2Can FestivalIsraeli Film Festival KolnoaBollywood Festival, Das FilmFest and Cine Argentino.

Kino Dlabačov is expanding its program into double features, with an English-language art film paired with a film with English and Czech subtitles.

The programs include the sartorial drama Phantom Thread and the Oscar-winning comedy Toni Erdmann on Monday, Oct. 1. Toni Erdmann is about a practical joking father tries to reconnect with his hard-working daughter by turning up in disguises.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and the Tunisian drama Hedi are on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Hedi is about a young man who suddenly discovers that his world goes beyond local conventions, though his mother has other plans.

The Florida Project, starring Willem Dafoe, and the French drama and Silver Bear winner Things to Come are on Tuesday, Oct, 16. The latter film has a philosophy teacher facing the death of her mother, getting fired, and a cheating husband.

You Were Never Really Here, a violent drama with Joaquin Phoenix, and the Romanian award-winning drama Sierra Nevada is on Monday, Oct. 22. Sierra Nevada features a doctor about to spend a Saturday at a somber family gathering, but the occasion does not go according to expectations.

The Death of Stalin and the French post-war drama The Innocents finish the month on Monday, Oct. 29. The Innocents has a French Red Cross doctor in 1945 who is asked for help by a nun whose convent has several pregnant nuns.

Kino Dlabačov is currently the only cinema in Prague 6. The 377 seat theater has recently been renovated to have 4k digital projection and 7.1 Surround Sound.

Světozor has so far only announced the Catch-Up Tuesday film for Oct. 2. The Polish film Mug (Twarz) won the Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival. The odd drama shows the struggles of a man in a small town who has a face transplant after a construction accident during the creation of the largest statue of Jesus in the world. The town, though, turns out to be not so very Christian after all.

The Be2Can Festival runs Oct. 3–9, but has just one English-friendly screening of the Japanese film Shoplifters at Lucerna on Oct. 3. The film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes.

Films in English in the festival are Under the Silver Lake at Lucerna on Oct. 5 and Atlas on Oct. 7; I, Daniel Blake at Evald on Oct. 5; You Were Never Really Here on Oct. 6 at Lucerna; and The Killing of a Sacred Deer at Lucerna on Oct. 10.

Israeli Film Festival Kolnoa runs Oct. 10 to 14 at Kino Pilotů, Kino 35 (French Institute) and Kino Lucerna. Most of the program is English friendly, though some lectures are in Czech only.

The Bollywood Festival also runs Oct. 10 to 14 and will be at Světozor with English-friendly films and a party at La Loca on Oct. 12.

Das Filmfest will run Oct. 17 to 23 at Lucerna and Atlas, with all but one of its films having English subtitles.

Cine Argentino will run Oct. 25 to 30 at Lucerna, and should have several English-subtitled entries, though the full schedule has not been announced.
