Sir Michael Caine wraps on Jan Žižka

The famous actor will have a supporting role in the action-filled historical drama

Oscar-winning actor Sir Michael Caine has said goodbye to Křivoklát Castle, where the most expensive Czech film ever made is currently under production. Jan Žižka, which will be released internationally as Medieval, is a historical tale based on the Hussite Wars on the early 1400s. The film is slated to be released in 2020. The budget is estimated Kč 500 million.

Caine, who is 85 years old, played the supporting role of Lord Boreš in the action-oriented production.

“I think it's a great story. There was an amazing atmosphere all around, and I enjoyed it very much,” Caine said.

He was not the only foreigner on the set. The cast also includes Ben Foster, Til Schweiger and Sophie Lowe. Czech actors include Ondřej Vetchý, Marek Vašut and Jan Budař.

Caine was fascinated by Czech cast and crew. “The Czechs are really nice. And tall! Just from the film, the director, my assistant, all my acting colleagues [were tall]. How do you do that?” he said jokingly.

Director Petr Jákl, who also wrote the script, is an imposing figure. He practices martial arts, and his father competed in judo in the 1972 Summer Olympics.

Caine is satisfied with the supporting role he had. "I am a very happy person, all my dreams are fulfilled. I am 85 years old, and I no longer dream of big roles. My dreams are all about my family and my grandchildren,” he said.

Director Jákl said the cooperation with the famed actor was an incredible experience. “Michael did not want anyone on the film to call him Sir. He gave me a chance and trusted me so much. I appreciate incredibly that he believed in me, and it is a tremendous honor for me to say that, "Jákl said.

Shooting began on Sept. 17, 2018, and will wrap in December. In the coming weeks, the cast and crew will move to other Czech castles and locations in the Czech Republic.

Jan Žižka is made with the support of the State Fund of Cinematography, the Prague Film Fund, Creative Europe MEDIA, Crestyl, the City of Prague, Central Bohemia and Milan Štěch, Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. Bioscop will distribute it to Czech cinemas.
