Italian film festival starting in Lucerna

Topics range from crime dramas to various people’s personal struggles

The 16th edition of Mittel Cinema Fest, the Central European festival of Italian film, is coming to kino Lucerna from Nov. 29 to Dec. 5. This is the sixth time the festival will be in Prague. Most of the films will have English and Czech subtitles.

“This festival is growing every year with a clear goal of offering new and successful examples of the last season of Italian cinema and at the same time to expanding the presence and distribution of Italian films in this country and throughout Central Europe.

Through the images and themes, we offer the audience an ideal path to cinema that reflects events in today’s Italy,” Italy’s ambassador to the Czech Republic, Francesco Saverio Nisio, said.

“The festival features not only films that are currently in Italian cinemas, but also works that were screened last season at international festivals this year and recently at the Venice International Film Festival,” he added.

The opening film will be Lucia’s Grace (Troppa grazia / Naléhavé zjevení), which was at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival this summer and screened in the Directors' Fortnight section at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, among other festivals. A single mother, struggles to balance her teenage daughter, a complicated love story and her professional career. She also realizes that a proposed building will be dangerous because of inaccurate topographic maps.

Several films will have their Czech premieres at the festival.

The period drama Capri-Revolution was screened in the main competition of the 75th Venice International Film Festival. On the eve of World War I, a group of artists from Northern Europe establishes themselves on the island of Capri.

The Armadillo’s Prophecy (La profezia dell'armadillo / Pásovcovo proroctví) is an adaptation of a graphic novel by by Zerocalcare. A struggling illustrator gets all of his news from an armadillo. A turn of events makes him reevaluate his life.

Someone looking over their life again figures into We’ll Be Young and Beautiful (Saremo giovani e bellissimi / Budeme mladí a překrásní).A woman who was a popular singer in the 1990s is now playing in small pubs, with her son on guitar. She blames him for the downturn in her career, but that may not be the full story.

Contemporaneity issues are seen in Twin Flowers (Fiore gemello / Spřízněná duše). A young woman is on the run from violent human traffickers pairs up with a refugee from Côte d'Ivoire, who is fleeing the police.

The Stolen Caravaggio (Una storia senza nome / Příběh beze jména) depicts a screenwriter who asks s a ghostwriter for help and winds up with a story about the mafia's involvement in an art theft.

Romance figures into The Man Who Bought The Moon (L'uomo che comprò la luna / Muž, který koupil měsíc). A fisherman promises his love the moon and tries to live up to his word.

My Beloved Enemy (Un nemico che ti vuole bene / Nepřítel, který tě má rád) is a revenge tale gone wrong. A professor saves the life of a hit man who, in return, promises to do the professor a favor. But the professor does not want it.

Boys Cry (La terra dell’abbastanza / Země hojnosti) was also at this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival as well as the 68th Berlin International Film Festival. Two youths become involved in petty crime, which escalates into a downward spiral.

The sole film not to have English subtitles is Dogman, which has already been in Czech theaters. Marcello Fonte won the award for Best Actor at Cannes for his role as a dog groomer in a small, economically depressed town.
