BestFilmFest has recent movies at a discount

Four Prague cinemas are showing popular movies for Kč 69 each

You can see many of the recent cinema hits and few misses as well for Kč 69 at four Prague cinemas until Dec. 19.

The winter 2018 edition of BestFilmFest takes place at Atlas, Evald, Lucerna and Mat cinemas. A lot of the films are in English, and kino Mat will have a few Czech films with English subtitles according to its schedule. Other non-English films, though, will only have Czech subtitles.

Evald and Mat are both rather small, and even Atlas and Lucerna can sell out, so advance tickets are recommended.

For families looking to get out of the house for the holidays, there is the star-studded Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the fluffy musical based on ABBA songs. Something with a little harder edge is the musical remake A Star Is Born (Zrodila se hvězda) featuring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, which is getting quite a few award nominations. A musical offering that flew a bit under the radar is Whitney, a biopic about pop star Whitney Houston.

The historical space epic First Man (První člověk) sees Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong in the run up to the moon landing. Another true story is BlacKKKlansman, the best effort from director Spike Lee in many years. This is based on an African American policeman who infiltrated the Klan in the 1970s. Adam Driver is among the cast.

Comedies on the program include Johnny English Strikes Again (Johnny English znovu zasahuje), starring Rowan Atkinson as a bumbling spy in a James Bond parody. It is all rather mindless and silly fun. Olga Kurylenko lends good support as a villain. Some black humor can be found in The Death of Stalin (Ztratili jsme Stalina), an absurd look at the power struggle in the Soviet Union in the 1950s. Steve Buscemi, Michael Palin and Olga Kurylenko (again) are featured in the cast.

Terry Gilliam’s long-awaited The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (Muž, který zabil Dona Quijota), starring Adam Driver, also has some comic overtones. The film is a modern reinterpretation of themes from the famous novel, and also ties together many ideas from across Gilliam’s long career.

Older actresses abound in Book Club (Dámský klub), a romantic comedy with Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen. The cast is excellent, but the film is a bit flat.

Action films aren’t overlooked. Ant-Man and the Wasp (Ant-Man a Wasp) is a rather fun entry in the Marvel series, with Paul Rudd as an unlikely superhero and Michael Douglas among the supporting cast. On the other hand, Venom takes a dark turn with lots of gruesome violence. It is a spinoff from Sider-Man, but not related to the Avengers series as it is made by a different studio.

An action film not from a comic book is Upgrade, a revenge fantasy about a man turned into a violent robot. It has bit of a retro feel, from the days when films like Cyborg and Universal Soldier were popular.

Crime can be found in Lars von Trier’s The House that Jack Built (Jack staví dům), starring Matt Dillon. The film follows the career of a fictional serial killer. True crime is seen in Loving Pablo (Escobar), with Javier Bardem as druglord Pablo Escobar and Penelope Cruz as his girlfriend.

All of the animated offerings are dubbed except for Loving Vincent (S láskou Vincent), a film based on the paintings of Vincent van Gogh.

The Australian documentary Mountain (Hora), narrated by Willem Dafoe takes viewers to the highest peaks in the world. The world of fashion is seen in the documentary McQueen.

Mat will have English subtitled screenings of Talks with TGM (Hovory s TGM), about Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk meeting Karel Čapek; the drama Smiles of Sad Men (Úsměvy smutných mužů); and the comedy Bear with Us (Chata na prodej).
