Toman leads in Czech Lion nominations

Some 18 films have been nominated in 15 categories in the ‘Czech Oscars’

The Czech Film and Television Academy (ČFTA) has announced nominations for the 26th Annual Czech Lion (Český lev) Awards. Winners will be announced on Saturday, March 23 at the Rudolfinum and the ceremony, moderated by Václav Kopta, will be televised on ČT1 starting at 8 pm.

The Czech Lion will be awarded in 15 statutory categories. The Czech Lions are considered the local equivalent of the Academy Awards.

The communist-era political drama Toman led with 13 nominations, followed by the costume drama The Hastrman (Hastrman) and the road film Winter Flies (Všechno bude), with 10 each. The historical dramas Golden Sting (Zlatý podraz) and Jan Palach had nine and eight nominations respectively. Jan Švankmajer’s bizarre mix of live action and animation, Insect (Hmyz), had five.

Toman, directed by Ondřej Trojan, looks into events surrounding the rise of communism in post-war Czechoslovakia, and particularly the career of controversial politician Zdeněk Toman, played by Jiří Macháček.

The Hastrman is based on a romantic thriller novel by Miloš Urban set in the 19th century, and was directed by jazz musician Ondřej Havelka.

Director Olmo Omerzu’s Winter Flies follows two boys on a road trip who pick up a hitchhiking woman for a series of misadventures then end in police station.

Golden Sting is another film set during the rise of communism, with a basketball team that just wants to play sports but can’t avoid being used a political pawn.

Jan Palach is a biopic about the student who sacrificed his life in protest against the effects of the 1968 Soviet-led invasion.

Insect, based loosely on the Čapek brothers’ allegorical play Pictures from the Insects' Life, has veteran surrealist director Jan Švankmajer making a film and a film about making a film at the same time. Actors rehearse for a play, while special effects are prepared and then run out of control.

Some awards were already given out at the nomination press conference. Toman won a non-statutory award for Best Poster, and the Film Fan Award went to The Smiles of Sad Men (Úsměvy smutných mužů).

The year 2018 was an anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia in 1918, the communist takeover in 1948 and the 1968 Soviet-led invasion, and as a result there were more historical dramas than usual. But overall there was a broad mix of genres. The 143 voting members of the academy selected from 69 feature-length feature live action, animated and documentary films distributed to theaters in 2018. There were 40 features, including animation, and 29 documentaries.

Nominations for Best TV Film or Miniseries and Best Dramatic TV Series will be announced on Feb. 25.

The ČFTA Presidium will also award a prize for an extraordinary contribution to Czech cinematography, or a lifetime achievement award.
