One World, Febiofest coming in March

Two of the biggest festivals are among the English-friendly cinema events

March sees two of Prague’s biggest film festivals, One World (Jeden svět) and Febiofest, plus the regularly scheduled English-friendly nights at the Světozor and Dlabačov cinemas and the latest installments of the Eigasai festival of Japanese films at Lucerna and of Shockproof (Festival otrlého diváka) at Kino Aero.

The 21st One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival runs March 6 to 17 at venues across Prague including Lucerna, Světozor, Evald. Oko. DOX, the French Institute and the Municipal Library.

This year’s theme is Safe Proximity, which will be reflected in two special categories.

Overall, the program is divided into a total of 14 categories – three competition categories and eight thematic ones, plus short films, virtual reality, and a special category for children, Docs for Kids.

This year’s festival presents 117 documentaries from 51 countries, with 17 world and international premieres and three European premieres. Over 140 festival guests are expected.

The 26th Prague International Film Festival Febiofest runs March 21 to 29 with most screenings at CineStar Anděl multiplex, plus some at CineStar Černý Most, Ponrepo and the Municipal Library. During nine days the festival will show over 150 films in 16 sections. The guests of honor will be Danish director Bille August and Czech actress Jiřina Bohdalová.

Highlights in the new films include Peter Jackson’s war documentary They Shall Not Grow Old and the drama If Beale Street Could Talk, which earned an Oscar for actress Regina King. There will also be some restored classics and a section of films matched with gourmet meals.

The 12th edition of the festival of Japanese film and culture, Eigasai 2019, runs March 18 to 24 at Lucerna. The theme this year is “my place in the sun.” All films shown in Lucerna’s large hall have English subtitles and are from the past decade. A documentary in the small hall does not have subtitles. In addition to films, there are performances and workshops.

The Shockproof festival is in its 15th year, with all screening at Kino Aero from March 5 to 10. The stated mission is to present “all forms of low-brow, bad taste, trash, and fun outside of the realm of run-of-the-mill.” Most films are English-friendly, but some will have comedic live Czech voiceover, and be suitable only for Czech speakers.

Highlights include another Mexican wrestling film, Santo vs. Evil Brain, and Robert Downey Sr’s oddball 1972 acid western Greaser’s Palace. Robert Downey Sr is the father of Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr.

Only two of this month’s Catch-Up Tuesday films at Světozor have been revealed so far.

The German romantic drama In the Aisles (Láska mezi regály / In den Gängen) plays March 5. Love blossoms, sort of, between a married woman and reticent tattooed young man who both work to keep a massive supermarket stocked. Sandra Hüller, who was in Toni Erdmann, is among the stars.

The other film is the Lebanese film Capernaum (Kafarnaum / Capharnaüm) on March 12.

It won the Jury Prize at the 2018 Cannes International Film Festival. The story focuses on an abused boy living in the slums, who after he runs away eventually confronts his parents in court.

Kino Dlabačov has English subtitled films on Mondays for Kč 100, and reprise films also for Kč 100. March 4 features the 2016 Bulgarian film Glory (Sláva / Slava), about corruption in society. The same evening has a reprise of Woody Allen’s Wonderwheel (Kolo zázraků).

March 11 has the Norwegian film Sami Blood (Sámská krev / Sameblod), about a 14-year-old girl who after facing prejudice decides to escape her town and disavow her Sami heritage.

March 18 brings us the 2016 Argentine film The Distinguished Citizen (El ciudadano ilustre / Vážený občan). A famed writer returns from Europe to his home town in Latin America and becomes entangled in local affairs and rivalries. This plays on the same night as a reprise screening of the Oscar-winning film Moonlight.
