Days of European Film starting

The festival is now in its 26th year and showcases films from EU countries

The 26th edition of Days of European Film takes place April 4–11 at Lucerna, Světozor and Kino Pilotů.

The festival presents 45 films from various parts of Europe, divided into themes including sports, nature, eroticism and love, music, and freedom of choice.

The opening is the French film Edmond. The costume comedy-drama tells the story of the poet and writer Edmond Rostand, who wrote Cyrano de Bergerac. The film has been seen by 700,000 cinema-goers in France alone since its January premiere.

“The film was also shot in the Czech Republic. From among 41 shooting days, 40 days were spent in Plzeň, Karlovy Vary and Prague. The audience can thus recognize the Estates Theatre and other locations in the scenes,” Roman Finger from Sirena Film said.

From among films by Czech producers, the festival will present a preview of Snowing! by Kristina Nedvědová, about the relationships of three generations of women in a family.

The director and some of the cast will attend the April 10 screening.

“From among foreign guests, the audience can look forward to seeing the Greek director Tassos Boulmetis who will personally present his film 1968, about a basketball match between the Greek club A.E.K. and the Prague club Slavia, in the Lucerna cinema on April 5,” festival programming director Hana Šilarová said.

Guests will also be present for the films Superchamp Returns, about an aging superhero, and Bille, a Latvian-Czech film about a young girl who tries to prove herself.

The festival’s 45 films are divided into 7 sections. Best Of is a selection of the most interesting films created over the recent years in Europe. A highlight is a dark thriller from Ireland called Black 47, directed by Lance Daly and starring Hugo Weaving and Barry Keoghan.

Love without Borders has a retrospective of erotic films including Blue Is the Warmest Colour, which won the Golden Palm at Cannes, and both parts of Nymphomaniac by the Danish director Lars von Trier.

Film & Music presents films with a musical theme. There is a recording of the opera Carmen, directed by Calixto Bieito, and a documentary about the Paris opera scene titled L’Opéra, directed by Jean-Stéphane Bron. On a different note, The Heart of Hadiah Tromp, directed by Erik de Bruyn, offers a light-hearted love story from a Navy environment.

The director Marián Polák will lead a discussion after his documentary Wilder Than Wilderness on April 6 at Světozor. It is in the festival’s Mother Nature section, which focuses on the environment.

The Eurosport section will offer King Skate and director Šimon Šafránek who will meet with the audience after the April 10 screening in the Kino Pilotů.

The Lux Film Prize shows three films, including the winner Woman at War, a comedy about a middle-aged Icelandic female environmental activist.

To the Point: To Have a Choice focuses on the topic of elections and the picture of political issues as presented by the media. The comedy The Divine Order deals with the topic of suffrage of women in Switzerland. The dark thriller Blind Spot shows a police captain who decides to join an ultra-right nationalist party.

The European House (Evropský dům) cinema at Jungmannova 745/24 will present a free screening of Murder: Anatomy of a Trial on April 10. There will also be a poster exhibition at the same place.

There will also be screenings set aside for schools, families with children and seniors.

The festival began before the Czech Republic joined the European Union as a way to introduce EU culture, but has continued on even after its original goal was achieved.
