Czech Lion nominations announced

The best of Czech filmmaking will be honored in March

The nominations for the Czech Lion awards (Český lev) have been announced. The awards are given out by the Czech Film and Television Academy (ČFTA), and are considered the local equivalent of the Oscars. The winners will be announced in a ceremony televised from the Rudolfinum on March 4.

Masaryk with 14 nominations led the pack, followed by Anthropoid with 12, The Teacher (Učitelka) with nine and I, Olga Hepnarová (Já, Olga Hepnarová) with eight. All four are based on historical events, although The Teacher is a rather loose adaptation of a popular rumor from the communist era. In total 42 features and animated films and 29 documentaries released in 2016 were considered by the ČFTA for a Czech Lion (Český lev).

Two non-statutory prizes were already given out at the news conference to announce the nominees. The best film poster of the year was the one for I, Olga Hepnarová, with its rather stark and haunting black-and-white design by Lukáš Veverka. The film has also already two awards at the Minsk International Film Festival and one at the Art Film Fest in Slovakia. The film is the true story of the last woman executed in Czechoslovakia. Actress Michalina Olszańska earned universal praise for her portrayal of the deeply troubled title character.

The non-statutory Film Fans Award went to Anthropoid, a co-production about the assassination of Nazi official Reinhard Heydrich in 1942. Actress Anna Geislerová, who appears in the film, was on hand to accept the award for director Sean Ellis. She read a message from director Sean Ellis from her phone. The film is nominated in every category except Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Documentary.

The film Masaryk from director Julius Ševčík covers the rather turbulent life of Jan Masaryk in the 1930s. The son of the first Czechoslovak president led a wild life in the time leading up to World War II. Among its 14 nominations is Karel Roden for Best Actor. He is ironically competing against himself, as the prolific actor was also nominated in the same category for the film We Are Never Alone (Nikdy nejsme sami).

The same situation occurs in the Best Costume category, with Katarína Štrbová-Bieliková nominated for both Masaryk and The Teacher. Two actors from Masaryk are also competing for Best Supporting Actor: Oldřich Kaiser and Hanns Zischler. Overall, Masaryk is nominated in every category except Best Actress and Best Documentary.

The Teacher, from director Jan Hřebejk looks at a school teacher who uses blackmail to get her students' parents to do her favors and also uses the students to run her errands. Among it nominations, Zuzana Mauréry is competing for Best Actress, and has already won an award for her role over the summer in the Karlovy Vary International film Festival. The film also alredy won two awards at the Gijón International Film Festival.

Nominations for television productions in two categories will be announced in February. The Czech Lions will also include the Magnesia Prize, a nonstatutory award for the best student film.
