Prague celebrates Europe Day on Střelecký ostrov

A free concert will feature top new artist Mirai, which won several awards recently

A free concert will take place May 9 at Střelecký ostrov as part of the international celebration of Europe Day. Countries from the European Union will also have information stands, and there will be games and refreshments.

Events start at 1 pm with games and contests at the countries' stands. These last until 6 pm. From 3 pm to 6 pm, there are presentations by different EU countries and their partners. There will be two one-hour panel discussions from 4 pm under the banner Café Evropa. A man who goes by the stage name of Nasty is the moderator of the day, but the event should be pleasant.

Music begins at 6:20 pm with Poetika, followed by Emma Smetana at 7:45 pm and Mirai at 9 pm.

Mirai is a pop group from Novy Jicin and Frýdek Místek. The group won three Český Slavík (Czech Nightingale) awards in 2017: for the new artist, most streamed and favorite song — “Když nemůžeš, tak přidej.” They also won Discovery of the Year at the 2018 Czech Anděl Awards for the album Konnichiwa. It was their first full-length album, following the 2015 EP Cesta z mesta.

Emma Smetana is a Czech actress, musician and journalist who studied in France and Germany. In 2012 she founded a band that performs under her name. She sings and plays guitar and piano in the band.

The band's 2016 debut album was What I've Done, which had the single “ No Fire.” The song is a hit on YouTube with over 1 million views.

Poetika is a trio from Vysočina that plays Czech pop rap. The members are Daniel Hrdlička (Dan Aerah), Eduard Rovenský (Packet) and Ondřej Brejška.

Europe Day is an annual observance by the EU, held every May 9. It is also known as Schuman Day, in commemoration of the 1950 Schuman Declaration, which led to the European Coal and Steel Community in 1952. The day is the EU's equivalent of a national day, though in most countries it is not a day off from work.

Following the establishment of the European Union in 1993, observance of Europe Day increased significantly. Germany since 1995 celebrates an entire Europe Week.

The Czech Republic joined the European Union on May 1, 2004.
