Europe Day is an annual observance by the EU, held every May 9. It is also known as Schuman Day, in commemoration of the 1950 Schuman Declaration, which led to the European Coal and Steel Community in 1952. The day is the EU's equivalent of a national day, though in most countries it is not a day off from work.
Following the establishment of the European Union in 1993, observance of Europe Day increased significantly. Germany since 1995 celebrates an entire Europe Week.
The Czech Republic joined the European Union on May 1, 2004.
