Prague to host 100,000 Harley-Davidson fans

The American motorcycle brand will celebrate is 115th anniversary in Prague

The American motorcycle brand Harley-Davidson is celebrating its 115th birthday, and there will be a large number of bikers coming to Prague from July 5 to 8. More than 60,000 motorcycles are expected to participate, with over 100,000 people coming to the city from 71 countries or territories.

The main center of activities will be Výstaviště in Holešovice.

“We had to choose a place with good infrastructure, accommodation capacity, suitable spaces and a strong motorcycle tradition, but we also wanted a place that would be extremely attractive and appealing,” Trevor Barton of Harley-Davidson International said, adding the company has a big event every five years.

Over 150 Harley-Davidson models will be exhibited from 1914 up to current models, including some rarities such as the Harley-Davidson F1000 Race from 1929.

On July 7 there will be a motorcycle ride in the streets of Prague featuring 4,000 motorcycles in three waves. It will start at Letná and go through Wenceslas Square, around náměstí Jana Palacha and then back to Výstaviště in Holešovice.

Staropramen Brewery will create a special non-alcoholic beer, so people who are behind the handlebars can drink.

The website of the event says that this is a celebration of the desire for freedom on two wheels that connects generations and continents.

The event is expected to bring Kč 550 million into the local economy. Prague City Hall supported the event with Kč 5 million and the Central Bohemia Region gave Kč 10 million.

The main organizer of the event, Jaroslav Vavřina, said 48 percent of Czechs see the brand favorably and would like to ride the brand's motorcycle at least once.

Karen Davidson is expected to visit the celebration. She is the great-granddaughter of Arthur Davidson, who, together with William S. Harley, established the motorcycle manufacturing company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Many bikers are also expected to come for the July 4 concert by the Rolling Stones at Letiště Letňany.

Prague is home to the oldest Harley-Davidson club in the world. Harley-Davidson Club of Prague is celebrating its 90th birthday at the National Technical Museum with an exhibition that runs until Oct. 28.

The sales of Harley-Davidson motorcycles on the Czech and Slovak market last year increased 31 percent to 858 units, of which 549 were sold in the Czech Republic. The company expects demand to grow further.
