Easter markets opening April 6

Changes are planned, but there will still be a strong sense of Czech traditions

The largest Easter markets in the Czech Republic will open in Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square starting April 6 and lasting until Sunday, April 28, 2019.

The main markets will be operated by Taiko, the same firm that runs the Christmas markets on the city’s central squares.

Dozens of sales stands will be in Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square as well as in náměstí Republiky, with spring and Easter goods and a wide range of snacks. Hand-decorated Easter eggs, lace, traditional woven birch whips (pomlázky), wooden noisemakers and traditional decorations should be among the available items.

There will also be a large accompanying program of music, folk dancing other entertainment centered at Old Town Square. The markets will be decorated with birch branches and spring flowers.

“This year we want to incorporate more vivid flowers into the decorations. While Old Town Square will be decorated in a traditional spirit, Wenceslas Square will at first glance experience some changes,” Taiko’s board chairman Libor Votruba said.

Market visitors will also find popular photo spots to take selfies for social media and will be able to familiarize themselves with Czech and Slovak folk customs and traditions.

Easter falls on April 21 for Christians who follow the western calendar, and on April 28 for followers of the Orthodox calendar.

In the Czech Republic, Good Friday on April 19 and Easter Monday on April 22 are public holidays, creating a four-day weekend.
