Best areas to live in Prague for couples: pick by your Thursday night
Two incomes, one bedroom and two sets of opinions. How couples can choose between Vinohrady, Karlín, Letná, Vršovice and the quieter options.
The short version
- Most couples start with a 2+kk (living room, bedroom, kitchenette) in a district on a metro line or a good tram route.
- Choose the area for the way you both spend an ordinary weeknight, not for the best weekend.
- Share the maths: total monthly cost, two commutes, and who is named on the lease.

The real test of a couple's neighbourhood is a Thursday night. Neither of you wants to cook, one of you is tired, and the other would like to be anywhere with a table. Where do you end up, and can you walk home without a negotiation? Answer that for both of you and the shortlist writes itself.
Start with two commutes
Write down both workplaces and both likely routes. Prague's public transport is dense enough that the question is how many changes, not how many kilometres. Because metro lines A, B and C cross at Můstek, Muzeum and Florenc, a flat on any line stays flexible if one of you changes jobs. Our metro, tram and bus guide explains how the pieces fit.
Then picture a normal week. Cooking at home means a decent supermarket and a market. Eating out means a street you can wander. Running or cycling means a park or a riverside path.
The districts couples pick
In Vinohrady, Thursday night means a long list of options, which is also why it is busy; see the Vinohrady guide. In Letná it is a short walk to the park and a view; the Letná guide explains the flats. Karlín is a riverside stroll and restaurants that lean towards the office crowd, covered in our Karlín guide. In Vršovice it is a local pub and a tram home.
If one of you likes noise and the other likes sleep, read the Žižkov guide, then the page on quiet neighbourhoods, and settle in the middle.
What it costs
We don't print rent figures, because they move. Use the portals: filter by layout and district, read 15 or 20 listings and take the middle. Two incomes stretch further than one, but a second bedroom (3+kk) gets dear quickly in popular areas, and many couples take a 2+kk in a better location over a 3+kk in a worse one. Our guide to 2+kk flats shows how to compare, and the 3+kk guide covers the step up.
A district's cost is also time. Ask how much longer a daily commute is worth to each of you for every hundred crowns saved.
Practical points for two
Who is on the lease? If both of you are named, both are responsible for the rent and both have tenant rights. If only one is, the other has fewer protections. Put the arrangement in writing.
Deposit. The legal cap is three months' rent. Agree how you split it, and how you'd divide the return.
Registration. If either of you needs a registered address for visa or insurance matters, check that the landlord agrees before signing. Foreigners should follow Ministry of the Interior rules for their status.
Pets. Many Prague leases restrict them. Ask early.
If one of you leaves. On a joint lease the other remains responsible unless the landlord agrees to change the contract, and a private agreement between the two of you doesn't bind the landlord. Decide in advance who would stay and who would take over the deposit.
Working from home, both of you
Two people working from home in a 2+kk is a negotiation about the sofa. If you both work remotely, think about a layout with a separate room each, or a district with a coworking space and cafés with decent Wi-Fi nearby. Our coworking guide helps you choose. A flat on a loud tram street also makes video calls miserable.
When renting stops making sense
Stay long enough and the question changes. Hypoteky.com's tool for setting rent against ownership costs lets you test both with your own assumptions, and once two incomes make a mortgage plausible, how much two incomes could borrow gives a rough indication. Both are estimates, not offers. Our first-flat guide explains the process, and nobody is pushing you: a year of renting teaches you what you really want.
Frequently asked questions
How many rooms do two people need?
Many couples choose 2+kk, a living room plus a bedroom. If you both work from home, a 3+kk gives each of you a space.
Should both names be on the lease?
Usually it is fairer and safer. Both are then responsible for the rent, and both have tenant rights.
Which is the most romantic area?
That's a matter of taste. Letná, Vinohrady and Vyšehrad are popular for walks.
Is it cheaper to share a bigger flat with friends?
Sometimes. Our guide to cheap rooms and flatshares covers what to check.
This is a general explainer, not legal or tax advice.
