Prague Independent Film Festival coming in August

The second edition of the festival will showcase cinema outside the mainstream

Big studios and multiplexes have really pushed truly independent films into the fringes. Even when something is promoted as “independent” is is often just a quirky film funded by a big distributor.

So chances to see something outside the mainstream on a big screen are getting rare.

The second edition of the Prague Independent Film Festival takes place Aug. 3 to 6 with most screenings at Evald cinema. The aim of the festival is to discover new talents and to help filmmakers to find an audience and do some professional networking. Several filmmakers and actors will be attending the festival to introduce their films.

Aside from film screenings, there are events at cafes where filmmakers and guests will discuss cinema-related topics.

The festival opens with the film The Collector by Alexey Krasovsky. It is about an employee of a debt collection firm who becomes a target of blackmail. The film won the jury award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2016.

In all the festival has four features and several blocks of short films. The other features are the Pakistani film Mahemir by Anjum Shahzad, based on the life of the famous 18th century poet Mir Taqi Mir; the US film Maya Dardel by Zachary Cotler and Magdalena Zyzak, about a distinguished writer who announces on radio that she plans to kill herself; and the Serbian film Train Driver’s Diary by Miloš Radović, a dark comedy about a man who tries to stop his adopted son from following him in his profession. Films will have English subtitles or be in English.

The festival will conclude with an award ceremony, giving the best film the Golden Eagle. There are also awards in several categories of film and for Best Actor, Actress, Director, Art Direction, Screenplay, and Cinematography.
